The Atlantic
crossing was from Southampton to the Azores, Azores to Bermuda,
and then Bermuda to Baltimore. With 2020 hind-sight, we realize
that the ship could have made it from Southampton to Baltimore non-stop,
but at the time nobody knew much about the fuel consumption, fuel
capacity, condition of the ship in general, and a thousand other
things. So it seemed best to be careful and make a couple of stops.
They turned out to be useful, as there were minor repairs that had
to be made at both stops, a burned out transformer and one of her
two rudders jammed briefly because all of the lubrication had leaked
while she was in storage.
These photos
were shot by someone we do not know, and they didn't know anything
about the ship, except that it was unusual looking - the photographer
in fact had just sailed to Bermuda on the sailboat that is shown
in one of the shots. That person then happened to show the photos
to a friend of theirs, who happened to work at Cidera, and said
"hey, that's my bosses boat!" and thus we have the shots.
